Indian Railway introduces SMS-based ticketing on Last Friday. This new system has two dedicated numbers as - 139 and 5676714 - for the service. The great thing about this technique is it will work on all types of mobile cell phones.

IRCTC is looking to enhance their ticket booking system through SMS or Menu based USSD technology. With the help of the above service a customer can not only book the tickets but will also have the facility to get the info about Trains, Stations and their timing, and availability.
Here question arises:

How the Money will get paid?

Well, Airtel Money, the mobile wallet from Bharti Airtel, has tied up with Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) to offer mobile based ticket reservations for over 185 million customers throughout the country.

Apart from booking tickets customers (Airtel) will be able to search for the stations, trains and their status, PNR enquiry and cancellation by dialing *400#, thereby accessing the USSD system, irrespective of the type of Cell Phones they are using and without being worried of the SMS or data charges.

USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) prompts the user with interactive and guided menu options for booking the tickets.

"In order to give improved customer service and empower the common man who does not have access to internet and cannot afford to buy smart phones, we are launching SMS ticket Booking service" railway minister ‘Mallikarjun Kharge’ said.

This service will help particularly the workers staying outside their home as they will find the service helpful and cost effective also they don’t have to travel to the Ticket booking counters.

Ticket booking through non internet based cell phones, launched as pilot project will also help the IRCTC to overcome the different challenge that IRCTC is facing currently.
